Date Night at Buttermilk and Bourbon in Boston

In recent years, I’ve really embraced the small plates restaurant model. I like that I don’t have to commit to just one dish, but instead I can pick and choose a variety of shareable options. One of my favorite places for this is Buttermilk and Bourbon on Commonwealth Ave. in Boston.

The Southern-style small plates restaurant has a New Orleans vibe complete with quirky cocktails, fried chicken and spicy side dishes. The restaurant sits in a basement space just around the corner from Newbury St. and has outdoor seating in the summer. There are brick walls inside–each a different color depending on what space you’re in. There are potted plants on the wall and dim lighting. It’s becoming an increasingly popular spot, so I recommend making reservations on OpenTable.

My boyfriend and I have been regulars at this place for a while now, and Buttermilk and Bourbon recently changed its menu. I figure that makes it as good a time as any to write a blog post about this Boston gem.

Without further ado, here’s what I recommend:

Cocktails at Buttermilk and Bourbon

1. Yea You Right

grilled pineapple infused tequila, lime, jalapeño syrup, smoked chile salt

Basically, it’s a jalapeño margarita. I don’t have a super high tolerance for spicy food, and this had the perfect amount of kick to it.

2. When Life Gives You Lemons

fresh house lemonade spiked with your choice of raspberry, orange or blueberry 888 Organic Vodka

On the sweeter side of things, this drink reminds me of summer. I usually for the raspberry version.

3. Whodi Smash

Woodford bourbon, fresh lemon, mint, house simple, apricot syrup

I’ve never been a bourbon drinker, but this cocktail is delightful. It feels like the type of thing I’d sip on at the Kentucky Derby.

Small Plates at Buttermilk and Bourbon

1. Slow Roasted Baby Back Ribs

Carolina gold BBQ, red potato salad, cherry peppers

These are fall-of-the-bone ribs, and the potato salad is fluffy.

2. New Orleans Style Street Corn

chili-cheese fritos, creole mayo, jalapeño cheese, hot pepper jelly

Not spicy at all in my opinion with a great flavor and texture. I could go and just eat this for dinner. Do yourself a favor and order them.

3. Fried Chicken Sliders

smoked Nashville mayo, pickled green tomato, shredded lettuce

Buttermilk and Bourbon knows fried chicken. I love the sliders, but they also have fried chicken on the menu as wings, thighs and a half chicken. Crispy and full of all the right flavors.

Until my next meal, here goes nothing.
